Congress & delegates’ assembly

At the congress, which takes place every four years, and at the annual delegates’ assembly, our members decide on the union’s trade union and political direction and decide on statutes, regulations and finances. They also elect the members of the Central Executive Committee and the Executive Board.

Central Executive Board

The Central Executive Board is syndicom’s strategic management body. It usually meets four times a year to decide on current trade union and political issues.

Executive Board

Thanks to our democratic structures, our members have the opportunity to determine the direction and policies of their union:

  • in the personnel committees of individual companies, which syndicom supports in negotiations on wages and social plans
  • in the committees of our 14 sectors, which negotiate collective labor agreements (CLA), for example
  • in one of our five interest groups
  • on the Central Executive Board
  • at the Delegates’ Assembly or at the Congress, where our national trade union policy is determined
  • in the sections that are involved in local trade union policy.

Our story

Did you know that…? The term «syndicate» (trade union) comes from the Greek «sin» (together) and «diké» (justice). In other words: working together for justice.

syndicom was formed in December 2010 at a founding congress and officially began operations in January 2011. It emerged from the merger of the communications union (GEKO) and the Swiss media trade union comedia.

  • comedia: comedia was the name of the largest Swiss media trade union, one of our predecessors. It was founded in December 1998 and was formed by the merger of the Printing and Paper Union (GDP), the Swiss Lithographers’ Association (SLB), the Swiss Journalists’ Union (as SJU a sub-association of VPOD) and the Employees’ Association of the Swiss Book Trade (ASB).

  • GEKO: The communication union, GEKO for short, is also a predecessor of syndicom. Employees in the postal, logistics, telecommunications, IT and air traffic control sectors were organized in GEKO. Many members worked for PTT, now known as Swiss Post (postal sector) and Swisscom (telecommunications). Other members worked for companies such as DPD, DHL, Sunrise and Skyguide.
