The syndicom story
The founding congress of our current trade union took place in December 2010 and it officially began operations in January 2011.
syndicom was formed in 2011 from the merger of the communications union and the media union comedia. Thanks to our democratic structures, our members have the opportunity to determine the direction and policies of their union. Be it in the personnel committees of individual companies, which syndicom supports in negotiations on wages and social plans. Or in the committees of our 14 sectors, which negotiate collective labor agreements (CLAs), for example. Or in one of our five interest groups. Or on the Central Executive Board, at the Delegates’ Assembly or at the Congress, where our national trade union policy is determined. Or in the sections that are involved in local trade union policy.
Comedia was the name of the largest Swiss media trade union, one of our predecessors.
It was founded in December 1998 and was formed by the merger of the Printing and Paper Union (GDP), the Swiss Lithographers’ Association (SLB), the Swiss Journalists’ Union (as SJU a sub-association of VPOD) and the Employees’ Association of the Swiss Book Trade (ASB).
The communication union, GEKO for short, is also a predecessor of syndicom.
Employees in the postal, logistics, telecommunications, IT and air traffic control sectors were organized in GEKO. Many members worked for PTT, now known as Swiss Post (postal sector) and Swisscom (telecommunications). Other members worked for companies such as DPD, DHL, Sunrise and Skyguide.
